The Rising Horde Volume Two Sequel to "The Gathering Dead" eBook Stephen Knight
As I read the book I was sure I was going to give it 5 stars. The action was intense, the military specifics of what was going on was realistic and awesome. However then I got to the end of the book. Yes we know what happens to the main characters but what about the rest of the world. How does everything end up fairing? I would have liked some closure there. Now I may be wrong and there might be another novel coming out after this one but I doubt it. If I could give this book 4.5 stars I would, just the weak ending really killed what was otherwise an outstanding novel. I highly recommend this series to any apocalyptic/zombie fans.Tags : Amazon.com: The Rising Horde, Volume Two (Sequel to "The Gathering Dead") eBook: Stephen Knight: Kindle Store, ebook,Stephen Knight,The Rising Horde, Volume Two (Sequel to "The Gathering Dead"),Ronin LLC,FICTION Occult & Supernatural,FICTION Horror
The Rising Horde Volume Two Sequel to "The Gathering Dead" eBook Stephen Knight Reviews
Wow... just wow... I said I was going to start my review of the second sequel the exact same way as the first considering I have read them both within the past 24 hrs because they were so good I just couldn't put them down!
Stephen Knight has hit it out of the ballpark with this series - especially with the sequels. I really enjoyed the Gathering Dead but to be truthful, it was a lot like other zombie books - military has to come in and rescue the scientist that has the potential cure for the zombie virus and then ends up fighting their way out to save the world. It was well written but it wasn't completely unique.
In "The Rising Horde" sequel, Mr Knight takes the zombie element and then takes it a step further and also turns it into a complete military campaign, complete with members of every service unit except the marines (I haven't figured out why they didn't get to come play too?). Actually, the marines don't seem to get to play in any of the zombie books... I think if I were in the marines, I would complain...
Anyhoo... if you haven't read the other books, you need to STOP RIGHT NOW... SPOILER ALERTS... BESIDES, YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON THE BEST ZOMBIE SERIES EVER..and really, not exaggerating here... at least in my humble opinion... Have you read the rest of them? Ok... I will wait a bit for you to come back... still waiting... finished yet? Ok... let's get to the action...
At the end of the Rising Horde, Volume One, Cord, Dave, and the rest of the gang of joint military specialists (minus the marines!) have basically finalized setting up the defenses of pharmacutical manufacturing facility and are just waiting for the zombies to arrive but guess what? That surprise at the end of the last book? The fact that the zombies seem to be on some type of mission? That is correct - the smart zombies have seemed to retain just enough brain power to know that they have to get to this facility because whatever is there can stop them thus, all of them are heading for Odessa - FIVE MILLION of them! And, as Dave points out, they only have approximately 600k bullets... that can't stop their mission though because the scientists have discovered a vaccine and have started manufacturing it. No, it can't cure a zombie, but if you have the vaccine, you won't turn into one if you are bit and we now have a chance to survive this apocalypse.
Jarworski has stated that they have not completed their mission which is to get the vaccine delivered to everyone in the US - that means, pulling back the troops helping the town of Odessa, not letting any of the civilians in who have gathered at the gate, not helping any Americans, and sacrificing everyone if necessary to protect the scientists and the workers at the facility. This, of course, does not set well with the rest of the soldiers who have the honor and duty to protect ALL Americans. The kick to this - Jarworski, even though he is leading this effort, has not actually SEEN the results of the zombies up close and personal. He has not watched people be attacked and eaten and torn apart - the soldiers under his leadership have.
The author continues with his wonderful characterization of all of the people in the book but especially Cord. You literally feel the weight of the world on his shoulders and how he is torn between his "management" duties of running his troops and wanting to be on the front line protecting the people and his troops. Watching his relationship with Dave and the respect that grows between them - whether either of them wants that to happen or not - is also very touching to see between these two very tough individuals.
The "secondary" characters - the leaders of the Seals, Rangers, etc... - are amazing people. Tough, yet so protective of their men, honorable..and they come to life for you. Of course, not everyone is going to live through this seige and I admit, I had tears in my eyes when some fell. The author made them "real" to me - like we had sat down for a beer and a few off color jokes - a true mark of talent for a writer.
The "twist" in the zombies is protrayed by "Dead Jeffries". Dead Jeffries was an officer who was killed in Virginia and has spent the past months walking toward his goal of reaching Odessa because he knows that it has to be destroyed before whatever they are doing there destroys the zombies. He doesn't understand what is driving him but has enough brain function to know that he has to get there. He also has "others" like him who are helping lead that pack of 5 million zombies to reach that goal. And guess what? LITTLE SPOILER ALERT Some can still use their brains for offensive purposes... I will let you be surprised how they managed that!
Cord is going to save the people, save the scientist, save his soldiers, save the world - the best that he can - or die trying.
It is always bittersweet to say goodbye to a beloved series and this is what we have to do at the end of the book. On the plus side, the author gave us an ending that made me cry a bit, sniffle a few times, and then give a big sigh and close the book with a smile and know that I enjoyed the time that I spent in the Gathering Dead World and that they were left with hope, just like I would want if they were truly alive.
Thanks Stephen Knight and I look forward to spending time together in the future with you and your imagination -)
I have really enjoyed this series overall. Action packed with lots of military team-based badassdom, for lack of a better phrase. Lots of characters that are easy to like, with just the right amount of depth to make their issues seem real. As some others have said, the ending is a bit of a gut punch, but it does seem appropriate nonetheless.
Now, that being said, there are a few things that i have problems with. *BE WARNED* SPOILERS PAST THIS POINT!!!
First, the smart zombies. Not a big fan of them overall in the series as they seem to be entirely too smart. They are supposed to have "some" of their skillset left over, but seem like they are almost fully effective. I like the idea of going for something a little different for the genre, but i don't think it works 100%
Talking specifically about this book and the "smart zombies", I could put aside the disbelief and see the zombies following "Dead Jefferies" dragging artillery pieces with them towards Sparta. It is harder to believe that they knew to bring extra ammunition, and to set up in a spot outside of the vision of the defenders. But the part that really annoys me is that after all of this, the zombies, even if the smart variety, are not specially trained on using the artillery, and somehow have the base zeroed in from the very first shot, and with no rangefinding equipment...something that even the specially trained forces at the base wouldn't be able to do. Earlier, the mortar teams inside the base had to zero in for being able to hit certain areas, so it made no sense for the zombies to be able to even come close to hitting their mark.
The introduction of other groups such as the army in singapore, and near the end of their chapter where it seems like the commander figures out an important tactic for fighting the dead, but then we never hear from them again. Or the park rangers from the island in Texas. It isn't uncommon to introduce new groups or characters that are never heard from after a few pages or a chapter in a zombie book, but that is normally because they are dying at the end of their run. Not so with these two groups I mentioned, so it seems a little like some loose threads.
Probably the biggest issue with it is how all of the undead start converging on Texas with no real explanation. Ok, sure, i could understand Dead Jeffries heading that way. I could understand many, or even for the sake of argument, ALL, of the zombies Dead Jefferies comes into contact with following him there. What I can't understand, other than maybe a bit of reverse Deus Ex Machina, is why all of the other zombies that have had no contact with Dead Jefferies also head to this research facility that they would most likely have had no knowledge of when they were alive, and that it is even less likely they would know of when dead.
Anyhow, despite the things that really annoyed me, the story is still solid, exciting, fun, and heartwrenching at different points. I really enjoyed it despite the few shortcomings, and will read any others that the author puts out.
I highly recommend this series to any apocalyptic/zombie fans.
