I'm what you call a person who exercised...recreationally. Last December, I joined a few friends from work for the Spartan Sprint. I am definitely one of those people who was out of my element, but was able to finish. Spartan race taught me what it means to have friends you can rely on. When you get lost in the hustle & bustle of life, you get used to doing everything yourself. I was then placed in a position where you can't do things by yourself, so I had to learn to trust others (again), and ended up building bonds and lasting memories. After the race, I was too tired to work out regularly, hence the continued "recreationalist". I ordered his book, read it (it's an easy read, 2 days), and started applying his common sense knowledge to life. I pretty much say to myself in the mornings now: cookie test (you will understand when you read the book). I also tell myself (when people throw high calorie food at me at work): is it worth it? In an effort to help others, I announce: 5 lb weight gain awaits you in the break room! John de Sena also has a lot of anecdotes, which I enjoyed reading.Tags : Spartan Up!: A Take-No-Prisoners Guide to Overcoming Obstacles and Achieving Peak Performance in Life [Joe De Sena, O'Connell Jeff] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <DIV>Twenty-six point two miles isn’t enough anymore. This isn't a how to book with a specific workout and nutrition guide or even a guide about obstacle course racing. If you're looking for that information seek it elsewhere. This book is a wake-up call to modern society and how soft and weak we have become. We are living in a dangerous age where we barely have to expend any energy to get our food. And that food is stripped of its nutrients for the sake of taste and convenience. Laced with chemicals never consumed before in the history of mankind its no wonder we are so sick with ADD, cancer, diabetes, restless leg syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome and a long list of ailments propped up by the pharmaceutical industry. Couches, beds, sitting in chairs all day at a desk and driving to and from work. Our bodies are not being utilized the way they were meant to be. It wrecks our hormones, kills our sex drive, drives us into depression and explodes our waistline. But there's a pill for each of those. Or there is the solution. The elephant in the room. The one most people mock, shun, or take offense to. But once you start eating real food and challenging your body the way our ancestors did just to survive then a heavy fog is lifted from your brain. The obstacles in a Spartan race are merely a way of showing you how you can overcome all of life's challenges. A metaphor for facing your fears, doubts and anxiety. This is also a small insight into the mind of an entrepreneur in his own words. Take life by the horns or keep living your comfortable life. It's up to you.
I'm truly disappointed in this book. I had it on pre-order and was under the impression that Joe De Sena, who is admittedly an absolute bad ass, would share his wisdom and secrets to success. Instead, 80% of the book is describing the Spartan Races he runs and testimonials/stories from people who have done one of his races. The actual useful content is minimal and to suggest its 20% useful content is too generous.
Other than the book being an obvious marketing ploy to sell his events, the editing is shocking. There is no flow to the book nor substance.
If the title is something that interests you I would suggest just going on his Spartan events and saving the time and financial investment on this book. I'm sure that people who've ran his races would enjoy this book more but personally, I'm thoroughly disappointed.
At age 60, I'm definitely old school with most my values. I was raised on a Ranch, served time in the NAVY, retired out of the DoD. Now I substitute teach pre-K through 12th grade in two school districts for a hobby. I love working with kids or even adults to help them do better in life. What I have found though is that the value system these days is broken and too many are totally lost out there. They have no moral compass or and thoughts of what they plan to do when they grow up. The entitlement generation is growing older but not growing up. That's what this book is all about and I loved it. It's NOT a feel good book or a pat on the back for doing a good job(when in fact you only did what anyone else can do). It's trying to tell people that it takes GRIT to do well in life and that material goods will never fill the empty void within our souls.
I did my first Spartan Sprint last January and while I did NOT break any records, I found that I still have it in me to reach deep and get it done. I plan on doing more events and may even move up to the longer ones as I get healthier and more fit. This book will help me whenever I start to lag and I need a kick in the butt. On most any page I can find something to keep the fire burning and know that so many others are out there that have done much more with much less than I have. So it's time to Spartan Up. See you soon on the hill or the mud...........all tuckered out.............but with a big smile on my face. AROO
