My father fought in this battle. He was with the 43rd inf div, a National Guard outfit comprised of New Englanders. My father was with Co K , 3rd bat, 172nd inf reg, 43rd div, which was comprised of men from the Burlington, Vt area. The 172nd was the unit aboard the SS Coolidge when she struck a mine and sank. This was his first engagement. I haven't read this book yet, though I just bought it. I know about the deficiency in leadership at the start of the campaign and the shake up that resulted. This was caused by inexperience of the leadership and resulted in the transfering of many senior officers to staff jobs in other theaters. That said, I am adding this account to my research of my father's service in WWII. He ( and others who served) didn't talk much about their experiences and I've had to piece together what it was like from many sources. It is easy to critisize the historical telling of this battle but that is all we have left now, since most of the veterans have passed on ( my father died in 1981). What should be paramount is we remember the sacrifice of these men when the nation was fighting for it's life. Too all veterans ( I am a US Navy veteran of Vietnam myself) I say HOO-RAH,well done.

Today, I would guess only a few, other than World War 2 buffs, know the location of the Munda Trail. Read Eric Hammel's book for an excellent overview of the little known New Georgia Island campaign in the Solomon Island archipelago. The book arrived on time and in very good condition.
