Meh. In a future London, ACID rules and watches and punishes. Jenna has been wrongfully incarcerated but a rebel cell breaks her out. She goes on the run with another teen targeted by ACID. The problem with this book is that we have a hardcore heroine who is hardcore for about twenty pages and then turns into someone who cannot follow directions and keeps messing up carefully orchestrated plans to keep her safe. I hate people who cannot follow directions -- it is not a sign of heroism when you are just being selfish. Mostly Jenna puts on sedative/pain patches and tells people she will "figure it out" when faced with an imminent threat. I don't think the book was bad, but it felt like a bait and switch -- if you make me believe Jenna is going to bring some pain and revenge, let her do it. Minimal character development of secondary characters. Lots of action, but the pacing is uneven. I don't know that my high school readers will be as critical as I am, so I'm going to throw my copy into my classroom library and see how they feel about it. Language and situations are appropriate for high school.

Acid Emma Pass author 9780552566148 Books Reviews

Note I am not in the teen demographic for this book. As an adult, the flaws I see in it may be ones that are overlooked or ignored by a teen reader.

There were two things in this book I really didn't like. The first is the multiple instances of things that didn't make sense, even given the dystopian world in which the story is set. For example, at the beginning of the book, the main character Jenna is the only female (and a teenager at that) in a prison of men. And at one point in the book, Jenna has pain and a wound from removal of a tracking device, but a complete facial plastic surgery at the same time leaves no pain and no marks. The book is full of things like this that strain my ability to suspend disbelief to the point of breaking.

But worst is how Jenna goes from being tough and strong to acting like an idiot and being unable to disarm one guy. And the reason is, of course, instant love. She starts out the book fairly unlikeable, but able to keep herself safe. Then she meets a cute boy and thinks she is in love. Suddenly she not only can't defend herself against one guy but starts making really idiotic and thoughtless decisions.

I don't recommend this book.
A very good dystopian type of book. It kept me on my toes till the end. I wish there was a sequel!
It was exciting almost all the time, but sometimes it was just too much talking
Good story
I read this book in only 6 days. I barely placed it down because of work or school. It's the sort of book that keeps you on the edge with just a hint of romance. Kind of like Hunger Games, Tigers Curse or Eon.
I didn't like it or hate it. It show the future,
I hope never happens. Just knowing that is a
Scary thing
I honestly don't know how to rate this book. It felt like three different books all stitched together, some parts better than others.

The premise is great, the world-building awesome, the future that was mostly realistic and the action believable - that was all the good stuff!

Structurally this book irritated me. I just wanted to stick with Jenna but in the beginning I kept getting news articles or reports or letters or random ACID agent kommspeak - it didn't even seem necessary to the story since sticking with Jenna would've made it just as nail-biting, if not more so.

The blurb really is fantastic but it makes it sound like the whole book is about this girl in an all-male prison. I was really looking forward to a story that challenged gender roles and that showed an incredibly strong female protagonist. Nope. Honestly, if I'd known about the arranged marriage aspect of this story and the government legislation forbidding same-sex relationships, I might not have read this. Those two themes individually rub me up the wrong way - in the same book? Grrrrrrr!

I wasn't a fan of the book for the majority of the story and really just wanted to get back to Jenna. Finally, we did and the last 15% of this novel was fantastic, leaving just enough room for a sequel without it being too cliff-hangerish. I'm glad I didn't put this on the DNF pile because those last few action scenes are awesome.

Rating this book looks like this

Opening Jenna bits - 5 stars
Mia bits - 4 stars
Jess bits - 2 stars
Emo Jenna bits - 2 stars
Kick-ass Jenna bits - 5 stars

Giving it an average rating of 3.6/5 stars )
